Russel Crowe's impersonation of Peter O'Toole in Sir Lawrence of Arabia in the dirty pool he finds himself submerged in showcases his diverse talents and comedic skills. The performances are fantastic and hard to fault, with director Ridley Scott ensuring that all the mayhem is caught on film.

From the trendy chic small, but impractical hatchback, Max drives throughout the countryside, to the French bike riders resentment towards Lance Armstrong. Screenplay writer Marc Klein ensured Max had many cultural clashes with the French characters, that demonstrate the absurdity of each country's culture. Enter adult Max, who now is a London-based investment banker who inherits his uncle estate. At the very least, I will finally get to see some scenes from Provence which will have to do until I can visit there in the distant future.If you dream of exploring the French countryside, the endless bottles of wine to taste while pontificating the meaning of life, or dream of taking a summer walk through a French Chateau's garden, then this film will inspire anyone to start making those travel bookings.Ī Good Year follows Max Skinner as a youngster who spends his summers in Provence, at his Uncle Henry's chateau and vineyard.
Yet, as soon as it is possible to do so, I will be racing from the video store like a Renault on high-octane fuel to pop the flick into the DVD player. The movie cannot possibly be as good as the book and, indeed, was almost panned by critics as much as George W. Well, at least the DVD of the same title (featuring Russell Crowe) is coming out on February 27th. That’s almost too bad I enjoyed it so much that I wouldn’t have minded it last a few thousand more clock ticks. It particularly resonates with me because 1) I love France and 2) after substituting the Front Range for Provence, there are some parallels to my own life.ĭespite Peter’s so-vividly-described-that-you-can-taste-it prose, I was able to read the book in less than two days while in Durham for Dan’s birthday. Never mind that A Good Year not only follows this formula to a tee and is strikingly similar to Mr. Throw in some gorgeous French women and delightful activities such as running and voila, there you have the formula for a typical Peter Mayle novel. There he saunters along just enough to enjoy simple pleasures such as wine and cheese, mountain views and scarlet sunsets.
