Violetta disguises herself as a boy and takes part in the competition. He holds a jousting competition for knights to decide who will win his daughter. King Wilfred insists on getting Violetta married. Though she tries hard, she fails to prevail, and her brothers mock her and boast about their talents, and her nursemaid tries to persuade her to do more feminine activities. The King decides to raise her like his sons, and none of his subjects dare disagree.

At night she slips out into the woods and secretly teaches herself to become the cleverest, most nimble knight in the land.
